Ode to 2012

President Obama’s White House lease
Is in renewal.
Barack beat Mitt by just a bit in their
Presidential duel.
So now he’ll have a second term; we’ll see
What he will do.
And in about two years or so, the
Race will begin anew.

It was known as “Sandy”, largest storm
Anyone has seen.
Not only was it very big but
It was very mean.
It flooded lower Manhattan and
Ruined the Jersey Shore.
Let’s hope the likes of Sandy are gone;
Gone forevermore.

The song says “there’s a woman to blame”
It surely seemed that way.
David Petraeus quit his job as head
Of the CIA.
John Edwards had a mistrial amidst
His salacious deeds.
And it’s jail time for Sandusky
Despite his innocence pleas.

A doping scandal ruined Lance Armstrong
And his whole career.
A tainted lab in the Bay State
Spawned a meningitis fear.
A cruise ship toppled on its side
Off Italy’s sunny coast
And the GSA in Washington was the
Place that partied most.

Violent shootings led the evening news
Too many times.
A Colorado movie house the
Worst of all those crimes.
Screws came loose in some airplanes
And seats began to slide.
And Tom Cruise split with Katie Holmes, will
Tom seek a fourth bride?

A man jumped from an airplane more than
Twenty miles high.
He broke the speed of sound as he came
Tumbling from the sky.
Augusta National said having
Women would be nice.
And the first to wear the green jacket
Is Condeleezza Rice.

Triple digit temperatures were
Baking the Midwest.
Olympic size wildfires charred
Several states out west.
Isaac cut an awful path to
The Gulf of Mexico,
And slammed into those coastal states
With a devastating blow.

Eyes were turned to the UK for
A big Olympic gape.
NBC televised the Games, but
Primetime was on tape.
England also gave us a tremendous
Royal ado.
Elizabeth now has been Queen
Since 1952.

The Giants won the Super Bowl and
The Classic in the Fall.
New York’s version in Football,
San Francisco’s in Baseball.
Bubba Watson won the Master’s;
Golfing’s Holy Grail,
And Magic Johnson wrote a check
When the Dodgers were for sale.

‘Twas 50 years ago that Kruschev
Tested JFK.
He stationed missiles in Cuba
Pointed at the USA.
With neither of them wont to be
The one to be hoodwinked.
In the end ‘twas Nikita; he
Was the one who blinked.

A hundred years ago Titanic sunk
Out in the dark.
The very same day Boston opened
Its new Fenway Park.
The Girl Scouts are a hundred, too,
And so is Oreo.
But it looks like Hostess Twinkies are
Facing tales of woe.

Nik Walenda crossed Niagara Falls
On a high wire.
Politicos were watching tax breaks
Set to expire.
Contempt charges were levied against
Attorney General Holder.
And the rumblings heard from Iran
Got bolder and bolder.

Pro sports came back to Brooklyn in the
Form of Basketball.
And the Wildcats of Kentucky aced
College Basketball.
There was a solar eclipse but it
Wasn’t seen from here.
And a raucous Jet Blue captain
Had his passengers in fear.

Troubled times continued throughout the
Middle East.
The dust up in the Gaza Strip;
Surely not the least.
Libya and Syria neither one
Havens of Hope.
And Egypt, crying out again: how
Do those people cope?

The Governor of Wisconsin survived
A recall vote.
Moody’s downgraded big banks, that
Was a cause for note.
BP said they were guilty in last
Year’s oil spill.
As part of being guilty; a fine
Almost five bil.

Maggie made a gallant try to take
Louise’s seat.
Kathy Hocul’s reelection bid
Saw her defeat.
A school bus monitor who rode for
The district In Greece
Was, morally, the winner when
The screed of some teens ceased.

A local man was locked up for his
Fondling of feet.
And cameras mounted at Oak Hill were
Deemed not too discreet.
A children’s hospital will grow from
Golisano’s donation.
And New York State has the highest tax
Of any in the Nation.

Kodak’s downward spiral wasn’t
A nice thing to see.
But a Knighthawk’s Champion Cup was cause
For a little local glee.
Mild temps near the winter’s end brought smiles
And we appealed.
And we even had Andy Pettite pitch
A game at Frontier Field.

Once again we call the names of some
Who’ve passed away.
Reminding us we never know the
Hour nor the day.
Life is very precious and it can
Be gone so fast.
Let’s hope we live each day of it
As if it were our last.

Baseball’s Johnny Pesky, Gore Vidal,
Ernest Borgnine.
Gameshow host, Richard Dawson,
Robin Gibb, who sang so fine.
Mike Wallace of CBS,
Don Cornelius of Soul Train
And Joe Paterno of Penn State
Who died tainted with shame.

Larry Hagman of “Dallas”, J.R.
Of old TV.
Dot McGuire; Andy Williams,
Neither missed a key.
Marvin Miller, Phyllis Diller,
Football’s Art Modell.
Vidal Sasoon, Thomas Kinkaid,
Bert Sugar, who wrote so well.

Marvin Hamlisch who penned songs that
Everybody knows.
Andy Griffith, Sherman Helmsley, both
With TV shows.
Kitty Wells, the country singer from
Some years ago.
And Helen Gurley Brown, the girl
Who honchoed at “Cosmo”.

Songstress Whitney Houston, many said
She died too soon.
Astronaut Neil Armstrong; he was first
To walk the moon.
Two pro stars named Carter,
Bowling’s Don; Baseball’s Gary.
And Rodney King, accidently;
He was soon to marry.

Boxing’s Hector Comacho, Football’s
Junior Seau.
Ray Bradbury; Nora Ephron, both
Gone form us now.
Dave Brubeck and Celeste Holm,
Sally Ride who went to space.
And Ambassador Chris Stevens:
His murder a disgrace.

So there it is, or was, another
Chapter in our days.
The ups and downs of 2012 were
Just another phase.
For sure the year ahead will bring us
More we’ve never seen.
Here’s wishing you the very best in
The year Twenty thirteen.
